Throughout the concert Mr. Mo’ moved the listener from one emotion to another, from happy to sad, from pleasant memories to painful ones. And the audience stayed with him on the journey.
Keb’ Mo’ brought his tour to Upstate New York’s Finger Lakes region on Sunday, June 16. Along with Phillip-Michael Scales, Keb’ Mo’ treated the Father’s Day crowd to a pleasing mix of jazz, blues, folk, pop, and a little rock ‘n’ roll thrown in as well.
Mr. Mo’ was in good form and the audience appreciated his interaction with them. He in turn told them they made him feel so at home he might just stay a while and maybe move here. Naturally, the audience cheered at the suggestions.
Tunes like “Somebody Hurt You,” “Sunny And Warm,” and the tongue-in-cheek “Government Cheese” were obvious crowd pleasers. “This Is My Home,” a tale of immigrants – both voluntary and involuntary – provided a thought-provoking moment rewarded with loud applause.
“Shave Yo Legs” was an endearing song about accepting someone just the way they are. “Good To Be (Home Again)” resonated with many in the over-60 crowd who were there in large numbers.
“I Remember You” was about a not-so-fondly remembered one-night stand. Throughout the concert Mr. Mo’ moved the listener from one emotion to another, from happy to sad, from pleasant memories to painful ones. And the audience stayed with him on the journey.
Although it was Father’s Day, the ladies in the audience received the greatest love when he sang “Put A Woman In Charge.” Women throughout the audience stood up to whoop, holler, and dance during the song – and more than a few men cheered with them. “This Is Where I Belong,” “Life Is Beautiful,” and “Everything I Need” were just a few of the additional songs performed by Mr. Mo’. Unfortunately he did not perform one of my favorites, “Soon As I Get Paid,” the one in which he has the IRS addressing him as Mr. Mo’.
Phillip-Michael Scales opened the concert for Keb’ Mo’ and was just as engaging with the audience. His half-hour set included “Be My Own Man” about what he termed “a post break-up situation,” “Shame,” Find A Way,” and “My Oh My.” Between songs talked to the audience, an ever-present smile beaming on his face. He talked about his family history, his love of coffee, and – somewhat tongue-in-cheek – about the merchandise he had for sale and which allows him to continue to pursue his passion for music.
Point of the Bluff is a vineyard, winery and concert venue situated on a bluff overlooking Keuka Lake just north of Hammondsport, NY. The grounds include a spacious picnic area (although you have to purchase food and drink on site), a pavilion, and a tented stage with seating area.
Keb’ Mo’ and Phillip-Michael Hall both will be on tour – together and separately – through the summer.
