Live review In the EU: Gerhard Polt and the Well brothers at the Theaterhaus Stuttgart 2025 – Photos

https://JazzBlues.EU April 11, 2025

Bavarian Gstanzl – Jazz Meets Cabaret!!! The Well brothers from Biermoos want to “just play” in their “Apropos” program – with Gerhard Polt, their instruments, and a lot of humor.

The three brothers Christoph, Karl, and Michael Well are multi-instrumentalists and, together with cabaret artist Gerhard Polt, will rock the Stuttgart Theaterhaus on March 18th and 19th – sold out both nights! Even though this online magazine is primarily about jazz, the writer of these lines would not classify the Wells in this genre.

However, what defines jazz also applies to the group: There seem to be few boundaries, meaning almost anything is allowed musically. The show opens with bagpipes, and the Wells enter the stage in single file with the protagonist Gerhard Polt. For the next two hours, Polt and the Wells take turns performing.

Bavarian dry humor and instrumental artistry

What connects the four performers? Bavarian dry humor and instrumental artistry. After the break, Polt puts the latter in the musical spotlight on the double bass, plucking along to the final note as the Wells present a short excerpt from Shostakovich with three accordions.

With accordion, hurdy-gurdy, harp, trumpet, guitar, double bass, recorder, hum pot, alphorn, tuba, and tenor horn, some unusual works are presented. For example, one composed for the fire department’s anniversary, consisting of four movements. It sounds both solemn and witty.

Later, there are even swinging mountain grooves, which Polt garnishes with cow and goat sounds, as well as cowbells. Alpinismo Tropical briefly transports you to South America, where Polt can’t resist an Andean yodel.

In his dry manner, Polt explains what coziness is, why he doesn’t understand car manufacturers who build ever wider cars that no longer fit in any garage, and how he defines cultural responsibility.

This reflects on an entertaining, humorous, and entertaining evening that struck a chord with the audience.
