Written interview with acclaimed Grammy Award-winning jazz and blues bass-baritone vocalist Jamie Davis – Stepping Out!
JazzBlues European Union: – Thank you for taking the time to have this interview with Jazz Blues EU. Tell us about your music. When did you start performing?
Jamie Davis: – Like many African American artists, my love for music began in the church, where my father served as pastor. I’ve been performing since childhood and formed my own band at the age of 13. As my voice matured and deepened, I became drawn to the timeless elegance of traditional jazz ballads, inspired by the legendary baritone vocalists who paved the way.
What do you consider to be your hometown and how does that affect your music?
I’ve called Northern California’s San Francisco Bay Area home for decades, where I’ve experienced the full spectrum of jazz performed by some of the finest musicians in the genre. Yet my heart remains with straight-ahead, class jazz, especially romantic ballads that showcase the beauty and depth of the music. However, on my new album, “Steppin’ Out,” I’ve included some swing, bossa and blues as well.
What performers have been your inspiration?
Throughout my life, I’ve drawn inspiration from a wide range of vocalists. In my youth, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, ad Ray Charles played an important role in shaping my musical development. As my voice matured, I gravitated toward the rich, expressive styles of Lou Rawls, Brook Benton, Jonny Hartman, Arthur Prysock, Joe Williams, Nat King Cole, and Billy Eckstine, whose artistry helped shape my approach to classic jazz and the baritone tradition
What do you find most challenging about being an independent artist in today’s music industry?
The challenge of being an independent artist in today’s music industry are numerous. They include raising the necessary finances, working with inadequate support staff and managing time effectively. I’m often required to wear multiple hats – from scheduling performances and overseeing production and manufacturing to marketing, sales, and delivering the final product. Another challenge is navigating the changing landscape of music consumption by streaming platforms that take a substantial share of the revenue generated by the artist music.
What do you base your success on?
Success is subjective and measured differently by everyone, but for me, it comes down to financial achievement, audience and listeners appreciation, recognition and respect within the music industry, and above all, the satisfaction of creating and sharing great music.
Can you talk about your experiences collaborating with other artists or musicians? How does it influence your creative process?
Collaborating with other musicians, particularly internationally renowned and established artists, continually inspires me to elevate my craft. It challenges me to perform at my highest level while remaining receptive to new ideas, musical interpretations, creative approaches, and innovative arrangements. These opportunities keep me growing as an artist and deepens my appreciation for the collaborative spirit of jazz.
What was your latest musical release? Do you have any news to share? Could you share the story behind your latest new CD JAMIE DAVIS – Stepping Out what inspired its creation? How does your latest album fit into your creative path? Is this a goal you wanted to achieve?
”Steppin’ Out” is my latest recording and it was just released in October. When selecting the material for “Steppin’ Out,” I wanted to reflect the diversity of jazz while choosing songs that also resonated with me personally and allowed me to bring my own interpretation, moods, and experiences to the music. From intimate jazz ballads to soulful blues to swing and bossa nova; each selection reflects a different facet of my musical personality while also paying homage to the great artists who have inspired me.
The title “Steppin’ Out” reflects my desire to remind listeners that even in the autumn of my life, I remain a vibrant musical force with a unique voice, a wealth of experience, and something to offer the world. I think I confirmed this with “Steppin’ Out.”
How do you approach the process of songwriting, and are there any specific themes or emotions you tend to explore in your music?
All the selections on “Steppin’ Out” are interpretations of well-known songs that have stood the test of time. While I haven’t written original material lately, the songs I composed in the past have been inspired by my personal experiences and stories drawn from my life.
As an indie musician, how do you navigate the balance between creative freedom and commercial appeal?
At this stage of my career as an independent artist, creative freedom takes precedence over commercial appeal. I choose songs that resonate with me personally and have the power to move the listener emotionally. My goal is always to create music that touches the heart rather than simply follow commercial trends.
What role does technology and social media play in promoting your music and connecting with your audience?
The music industry has changed dramatically, with technology and social media now playing an essential role in promoting and sharing music. I embrace these platforms and use every available avenue to connect with my existing fans, expand my audience, and introduce my music to both current and new generations of jazz listeners.
Could you describe a memorable live performance experience or tour that has had a lasting impact on you and your music?
Performing at various venues and festivals throughout Japan has been one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences of my career. Japanese audiences are incredibly enthusiastic, engaged, and deeply appreciative of jazz. Japan has a vibrant jazz scene and the energy in the clubs and festivals is remarkable, with performances drawing full houses. The warmth and unwavering support I received from fans at my performances in Japan left a lasting impression on me.
In an era of streaming platforms, how do you feel about the changing landscape of music consumption and its impact on independent musicians?
Like many independent artists, I’ve certainly been affected by the rise of streaming platforms and the dramatic shift in how audiences consume music. While streaming has expanded access to music, the platforms retain a disproportionate share of revenue, making it increasingly challenging to generate income through traditional CD and album sales. As an independent artist, I’ve taken a proactive approach and established my own label, Womani Jazz and sell my music and merchandise directly through my website, jamiedavis.music, as well as at live performances.
Musicians often have a close relationship with their fanbase. How do you engage with your fans and build a dedicated community around your music?
Social media platforms are essential for staying connected with my loyal fans while also reaching new and broader audiences. I use these platforms not simply to promote my music, but to engage in meaningful interaction and build lasting relationships with listeners. I also periodically send email blasts to fans who subscribe through my website, keeping them informed about new releases, performances, and other developments in my musical journey.
How can fans find you? Lastly, please share some final words with the fans.
I’d like to thank my fans for their continued support over the years and hope that “Steppin’ Out” will garner new jazz listeners. Please check me out on www.jamiedavis.music
